The Inclusion Pyramid

The Inclusion Pyramid was created to untangle the seven types of stigma that are present in diabetes. They include Diabetes, Financial, Gender, Health, race, and Weight, and the seventh stigma is the stigma of ignorance.

The Pyramid is a visual representation of inclusion, and it provides a transformative tool for healthcare professionals to explore how belonging and othering are present in diabetes care. The IDC Pyramid provides the framework to dismantle stigma in diabetes care by identifying what supports or undermines sustainable self-care.

The left side of the Pyramid presents how feeling othered create invisible barriers to sustainable self-care. The right side of the Pyramid presents how experiencing a sense of belonging supports sustainable self-care.

Here are three key articles that review each level of the pyramid. Reading these will guide you in considering how to bring belonging and inclusion into diabetes care.
